APARTMENT COMPLEX
2015, Massachusetts College of Art & Design
--
This project focused on many different levels and scales of a design. One of the first steps was to consider how various family or group sizes would live, and how to efficiently arrange the different apartment layouts.
Aside from the apartments themselves, the overall design strategy with this building was to bring the outside in. The site was located in Cambridge, MA, so the plan was to give residents green nature even in the cold winters of Massachusetts. The building is organized into two parallel atriums, with natural ventilations and solar efficiency keeping the extensive glass structure environmentally friendly. Within the atrium, trees, green walls, and hanging plants create a tropical feel in a northeast USA location, to which all of the apartments in the building open. On the main floor, different spaces for local businesses like stores, coffee shops and gyms give residents convenience, creating somewhat of a self-sustaining community within a building.
The design process of this project resulted in final renderings produced in photoshop, entry models and massing models made from laser cut wood and chipboard, and final plans enhanced in indesign. The entry model and exterior rendering were shown in an Architecture show in one of the MassArt galleries.
