SUBMERSIVE EDGE

2017, Massachusetts College of Art & Design

--

This project focuses on rising sea levels in Atlantic City, NJ with the design of a marine research center. Its program includes public observation rooms, research labs, presentation space, and display areas, organized by aquarium tanks in lieu of walls. The project intention is to invite visitors into a space normally reserved for scientists, so that the public can learn and respond to the marine world in an inclusive and holistic manner. In this way, researchers are able to explore and investigate possible solutions and adaptations to rising sea levels while visitors become knowledgeable and active in the same subjects.

The building will adapt to rising sea levels with future entrances and docks designed into the current program. The submersion room put visitors in front of the tides so that the rising sea levels are inescapable even within the time of one visit. This flexibility sets the example coastal architecture practice need to incorporate in both new construction and existing renovations. While we have the potential to improve issues in our environment, we are not capable of reversing climate change- the sea levels are projected to rise despite any actions, so we need to adapt.
